Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. If your business is still running it, every unpatched vulnerability is now a risk to your data, your customers and your compliance. Before deciding on hardware changes, read our flagship Best Business Laptops in South Africa guide to plan a sensible upgrade.
What does “end of support” mean?
Windows 10 still starts and runs, but Microsoft no longer provides free security fixes or standard technical support for it. Paid Extended Security Updates exist as a temporary bridge, but they are time-limited and add cost without improving your hardware. Check Microsoft’s current terms before relying on them.
The real risks of staying put
- Security: unpatched systems are easier targets for ransomware and data theft.
- Compliance: under POPIA you must take reasonable steps to secure personal information.
- Compatibility: newer software and security tools increasingly target Windows 11.
- Productivity: older machines slow your team down and fail more often.
Can your PCs run Windows 11?
Windows 11 needs a supported 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot and a TPM 2.0 chip. Many PCs older than about 2018 do not qualify. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check on each device, or ask us to audit your fleet.
How to plan the refresh
- Audit your devices: list age, specs and who uses each one.
- Sort into three groups: upgrade in place, replace now, replace later.
- Prioritise: start with staff who handle sensitive data or who use the oldest machines.
- Budget and standardise: buying one or two models makes setup and support easier.
- Migrate data safely: back up first and use a staged rollout to avoid downtime.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep using Windows 10 for business? It carries growing security risk because free security updates have ended, so most businesses should move to Windows 11 or replace unsupported devices.
Can all my computers upgrade to Windows 11? Not always. Windows 11 requires a supported processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and minimum memory and storage. Older machines often fail these checks.
